Kylie Jenner was declared the youngest self-made billionaire recently, but Dictionary.com have hit back at the claim by doing what they do best; defining words.

The 21-year-old has been raking in money from her beauty business Kylie Cosmetics, which was founded in 2015, and now she’s made history by overtaking Mark Zuckerberg to become the youngest person on Forbes’ billionaires list.

Zuckerberg was a computer programming whiz from a young age, and became a billionaire at the age of 23 after founding Facebook.

Clearly there are some differences between Zuckerberg and Kylie’s success stories, as thanks to the model’s relation to the Kardashians, people across the world knew who she was even before Kylie Cosmetics.

But despite this useful stepping stone into stardom, the 21-year-old has defended her right to be classed as ‘self made’ as she explained her parents cut her off when she was 15, forcing her to make her own money.

In an interview with Paper magazine, she said:

I really spent every last dime that I had starting it, not even knowing if it would be successful.

My parents told me I needed to make my own money, it’s time to learn how to save and spend your own money, stuff like that.

What I’m trying to say is I did have a platform, but none of my money is inherited.

Last year, Forbes predicted Kylie would become the youngest self-made billionaire; a statement that was met with a lot of backlash at the time.

Dictionary.com were more than happy to chime in and try and correct Forbes for their apparent mistake, writing:

Self-made means having succeeded in life unaided.

Used in a sentence: Forbes says that Kylie Jenner is a self-made woman.

To clarify their definition, Forbes explained they used ‘self-made’ to refer to someone who didn’t inherit their business.

Kylie reached her recent milestone after her company’s revenue climbed nine per cent last year, with Forbes estimating Kylie Cosmetics is worth at least $900 million. Combined with the money she’d already earned, the young entrepreneur has an estimated fortune of $1 billion.

Speaking to Forbes about the achievement, Kylie said:

I didn’t expect anything. I did not foresee the future. But [the recognition] feels really good. That’s a nice pat on the back.

However, some people aren’t convinced the model is deserving of the title, and Dictionary.com were quick to unleash their criticism once again.

Responding to the news, they wrote:

Haven’t we gone over this?

Self-made: Having succeeded in life unaided.

I mean, it’s hard to argue with a dictionary definition, but I don’t think Forbes will be changing their minds now. They’ll just have to deal with all the criticism that’s currently being thrown at them.

And there’s a lot of it:

How can they call kylie Jenner self made billionaire as if she started with nothing? 😂

Kylie Jenner being a self-made millionaire: "She used her fame and family wealth intelligently" As if making impressionable people buy your half-assed lip kit when you're handed the fame and fortune to support your business is difficult. Mark Zuckerberg is self-made.

why are we calling kylie jenner a self made billionaire as if she wasn't born into a multimillion dollar family, has had a platform since birth & used family capital to start her venture?

At the end of the day, people can argue all they want, but it won’t make Kylie any less rich. She got dealt a good hand in life, let’s just accept it and move on to more important things.
