These Hangover Beauty Tips Will Let You Enjoy Your Holiday Party So Much More

We love holiday parties — the champagne, the lights, the cheer, the champagne. What we don’t love is the holiday party aftermath — the headache, the puffiness, the dark circles. So while a hangover is often inevitable, what’s not inevitable is having a bad skin day the day after. Just follow these holiday party hangover beauty tips, do some prep beforehand, and get ready to, well, if not exactly glow, at least not look as bad as it could be.


A show of hands: Who all has been to a holiday party this year? Multiple holiday parties? Parties where you mayyyyybe had a little too much champagne or vodka tonics and you woke up the next morning feeling like a hot mess … and then you looked in the mirror and gasped because somehow you have to pull yourself together for another day at work or a Sunday brunch and your skin is splotchy and red and your eyes are bloodshot and you look like you’ve possibly died and been brought back to life?

It’s OK. We’ve all been there (maybe a few times too many *coughcollegecough*). And I’m here to help you out with some holiday hangover beauty tips that I’ve learned over the years.

Before going out

If you know you have a night of drinks ahead of you, take some precautions before you go. Place some Aleve or Advil next to your bed with a glass of water. Make sure all of your skincare is ready to remove your makeup, even if you have to just use some makeup wipes and call it a day. The Aleve/Advil + water combo does more than just stop the impending headache — it’ll also help decrease inflammation, aka goodbye puffy eyes and face. If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready, OK?!

Also, put a sheet mask or a hydrating gel mask in the fridge to use the next day. Trust me, you’ll thank me later for this tip.

When you get home

So you’re finally back home. Make a beeline for the bathroom and take your makeup off. Before anything else. Going to bed with your makeup on is a grave sin, so please, don’t commit it.

If things got a bit too crazy, reach for those face wipes you left out and throw on some moisturizer and call it a day. Don’t forget to sip your water and take that Aleve! If you’re really prone to puffy face and eyes, go to bed with your pillows propped up.

The day after

Your alarm is ringing, the dog is barking, the light is too bright, and you feel like you got hit by a bus.

Step 1:

Get in the shower. Let it steam up, and use some sort of peppermint or orange body wash (or better yet, get some peppermint or eucalyptus essential oils and let them diffuse in the bathroom while you shower). The peppermint will kinda wake your body up and make you feel more alive, and I’m a firm believer that there’s nothing a good, hot shower can’t fix.

Step 2:

Wash your face. You may or may not have gotten all of your makeup off, so make sure to wash thoroughly. Spritz on a fancy mist, and then head to the kitchen.

Remember how I told you to put a sheet mask or a hydrating gel mask in the fridge? Well, this is where that step comes in. The slight chilliness of the mask will cause your blood vessels to constrict, decreasing the puffiness. Plus, when you have a throbbing headache, having something cold on your face feels like heaven.

Step 3:

Hopefully by now, you feel a little more like yourself and you can finish your skincare routine and move on to makeup. Honestly, after a long night I’m not going all out. A few pops of concealer on my dark spots and under my eyes, a little dash of highlight on my cheekbones, and a bright, bold lipstick can instantly make me look like I cared, instead of looking like I had one too many shots of tequila the night before.
